Frequently Asked Questions

Is this carbon footprint calculator really free?

Yes — the Scope 1, 2 and 3 calculator on this page is completely free with no sign-up required. To save your results, track multiple periods, and download a CSRD-ready PDF report, create a free EmissionPlan account.

What emission factors does this calculator use?

EmissionPlan uses DEFRA 2024 (UK Government) emission factors for energy and transport, which are widely accepted across the EU for GHG Protocol reporting. Electricity grid intensity factors are country-specific for 13 EU member states from the European Environment Agency.

Is this calculator suitable for CSRD reporting?

Yes. The results cover Scope 1, 2 and 3 as required by GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and ESRS VSME — the two standards referenced in CSRD. When you create a free account, EmissionPlan generates a PDF report that explicitly cites these standards, making it suitable for auditor review.

What is the difference between Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?

Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources you own or control (gas boilers, company vehicles). Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity — the amount varies by country. Scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions including business travel, employee commuting, and waste disposal.

How accurate are the results?

Results are estimates based on your inputs and official emission factors. Accuracy depends on the quality of data you enter. For a first carbon report, estimates are acceptable. For audit-ready submissions, we recommend keeping original bills and records as supporting evidence.

Which EU countries are supported?

Country-specific electricity grid factors are available for Germany, France, Poland, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, and Czech Republic. All other EU countries use the EU average grid factor (0.276 kgCO₂e/kWh).
